Jorhat, April 3: The election contest in Sarupathar intensified on Friday as Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Gaurav gogoi launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his alleged remarks involving Kunki Choudhury and her family.

Addressing the press after an election rally in Sarupathar, Gogoi said, “The Chief Minister’s attack on a woman like her reflects his own character and shows how low it is.”

“Again and again, we have seen him disrespecting his position and Assamese society by making such remarks. The sooner we bid him farewell, the sooner we can restore the dignity of the post,” he added.

Gogoi further stated that repeated controversial remarks by the Chief Minister have not only demeaned the office but also insulted the people of Assam.

He also added that the election presents an opportunity to bring political change in Assam by removing what he termed as “corrupt and syndicate-driven elements” from power.

“We have a good opportunity to remove corrupt and syndicate-running individuals from political power and build a progressive and prosperous society. I am hopeful that people will bid farewell to such forces on April 9,” he expressed.

The remarks came as Gaurav Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi intensified campaigning in Sarupathar in support of opposition alliance candidate Jibon Chutia of the Asom Jatiya Parishad.

Speaking on the sidelines, Lurinjyoti Gogoi claimed that voters in Sarupathar have already made up their minds in favour of the opposition candidate.

He further alleged that the sitting MLA is closely associated with the Chief Minister in various alleged irregularities.

“From the Apex Bank scam to issues in tea gardens, the MLA is seen as part of a syndicate and commission-based system linked to the Chief Minister,” he said.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi also raised several local issues, including unresolved inter-state border tensions with Nagaland, lack of land pattas for lakhs of residents, communal concerns, and pending demands such as ST status for six communities.

He added that voters are aware of past political decisions and expressed confidence that they would support Jibon Chutia to build a more inclusive society inspired by the ideals of Zubeen Garg.
