Guwahati, April 4: The 64th Grammy Awards was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 3. The award ceremony which recognizes the best recordings, compositions, and artists have been held every year since 1959. This year two categories- Best Global Music Performance and Best Música Urbana Album, were added, bringing the total number of categories to 86.
Jon Batiste received the most nominations with eleven, followed by Doja Cat, H.E.R., and Justin Bieber with eight each.
Batiste received the most awards with five, and won Album of the Year for We Are. Silk Sonic won Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Leave the Door Open", and Olivia Rodrigo won Best New Artist.
Indian composer Ricky Kej won his second Grammy, and won Best New Age Album for Divine Tides on which he collaborated with The Police drummer Stewart Copeland.
While Indian music composer AR Rahman made his presence felt in the Grammy's, Indians were disappointed as the Grammy's did not mention legendary Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar in the In Memoriam section during the ceremony.
Earlier, the Academy Awards' In Memoriam section was also missing Mangeshkar's name that left her fans upset. The 2022 Grammys' In Memoriam section paid tribute to songs by the late Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, performed by Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler. Taylor Hawkins and Tom Parker were also remembered.
However, Lata, along with late singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, did get a mention on Grammys' website, even if they were missing during the ceremony itself.
Amongst all, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has won praise for his leadership after Russia invaded the country, appeared in a video message during the Grammys.
