Retail inflation eases to 4.29 per cent in April

Guwahati, May 13: Retail inflation slowed to 4.29 per cent in April from 5.52 per cent in March, mainly due to easing food prices, government data showed on Wednesday.

The Reserve Bank mainly factors in the retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) while arriving at its monetary policy.

As per the data released by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, inflation in the food basket was 2.02 per cent in April, down from 4.87 per cent in the preceding month.


According to the published data, the inflation of cereals and products in April dipped by 2.96 per cent, meat and fish increased by 16.68 per cent, egg increased by 10.55 per cent, milk and milk products decreased by 0.13 per cent, oils and fats increased by 25.91 per cent, fruits increased by 9.81 per cent, vegetables decreased by 14.18 per cent, pulses increased by 7.51 per cent, sugar and confectionery dipped by 5.99 per cent, spices increased by 4.33 per cent, non-alcoholic beverages increased by 15.20 per cent, prepared meals, snacks, sweets etc. increased by 4 per cent, food and beverages increased by 2.66 per cent and pan, tobacco and intoxicants increased by 9.01 per cent.

Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA, said given the high base related to the supply disruptions seen during the nationwide lockdown in April 2020, the CPI inflation dipped to a three-month low in April 2021, while printing somewhat higher than the expectations.

Overall, the prevailing localised restrictions appear to have had a limited impact on prices in April 2021, she added.
