Silchar, May 16: Congratulating the BJP led State Government headed by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, members of All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association (ACKHSA) on Sunday placed demands for inducting two more legislators from Silchar and Karimganj Lok Sabha constituencies in the state cabinet.
Talking to reporters here at the Silchar Press Club, Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, adviser to the student body said "we are happy to see Parimal Suklabaidya being given an important ministry in the new Assam cabinet. However, a region which has been deprived and ignored in many aspects over the years should have at least two more ministers for effective utilization of the schemes and overall development. Hence, we seek the intervention of honorable Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in this regard." The student organisation hailed Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for his leadership in managing the COVID-19 pandemic across the state and urged people to follow the guidelines given by the Government for the larger interest. He appealed before the Government to announce a special financial package for the economically weaker section of the society who are affected because of the stricter measures and imposition of curfew from 11am everyday across the state.
On the vexed issue of the closed paper mills at Cachar and Nagaon, Rupam Nandi Purkayastha said that the proactive Chief Minister must look into the issue with priority and initiate steps to revive the mills at the earliest. Sharing his views, on behalf of the association on the proposed Medical College in Karimganj district , the student leader said that the Government must consider setting up the medical college at Dohalia under Patharkandi assembly constituency which is in proximity to all other locations within the district and urged Health Minister Keshab Mahanta and Patharkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul to look into the matter.
However, the student body has opposed the move for sample re-verification of the draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) stating that already many have died and many others have faced immense harassment in the bygone process of the NRC. Hence if the sample re-verification is carried out again, the exercise would create further difficulties and hardships for the people again. Terming the demise of renowned author, litterateur and journalist Homen Borgohain, who passed away following a cardiac arrest in Guwahati on last Wednesday as a great loss for the whole state, the ACKHSA members observed one-minute silence in the memory of the departed soul.
