Silchar, May 15: Five more COVID-19 afflicted casualties have been recorded at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital(SMCH) taking the tally to 52 casualties since January this year, said Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of the hospital.

In the words of Dr Gupta, among the five deaths, while one 55 year old patient from Karimganj died on Friday, four others from different parts of Cachar district including an 82 year old man passed away on Saturday. However, he added that 287 persons who had been affected by the virus have recovered and been discharged from the hospital so far.

Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, principal of SMCH said that there is a 100- bedded ICU for treating COVID-19 patients which is a major relief for the people of Barak Valley. 300 beds are kept for COVID wards and over 100 oxygen-supported beds would be prepared, he added. Even if the resources are stable for now, an increase in the number of patients might create scarcity in the coming days, the principal maintained. He thanked Minister of Environment and Excise Parimal Suklabaidya for assuring all possible help to the hospital in combating the COVID-19 scenario.
