Silchar, May 13: In the second wave of COVID-19, the surge of positive cases have been unabated so far and if the apprehensions of Silchar MP Dr Rajdip Roy are to be believed, the spell of the virus might intensify in the next few days across Barak Valley.

Talking to media persons at the BJP district office here on Thursday, Dr Roy said awareness and strict adherence to the SOP issued by the Government can save people from preventing the situation from getting worse. People must not lower their guard against this virus which is more fatal this year, he said.

" The Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) is the solitary hope for treatment covering 40 populations in southern Assam. But with over 250 positive cases under treatment, the demand for oxygen at the hospital has escalated to 20 times in the past 10 days. Despite having an oxygen plant at the hospital, 15 mt of oxygen are brought in from Nagaon, supply of which, if interrupted may pose serious hindrance to the doctors here in rendering treatment to the patients," Dr Roy said.

He was quick to add that along with newly elected Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, he met the authorities of SMCH and discussed at length on the capacity building measures for the hospital to combat the crisis and a blueprint has been chalked out as well. The Deputy Commissioner has also been intimated on the developments, he maintained.

Legislator Dipayan Chakraborty informed that he had visited SMCH Covid wars wearing PPE kit and interacted with the disease afflicted patients.

The district BJP functionaries including Bimolendu Roy, president in-charge and NB Dey Debashish Shome informed that the BJP office here will remain closed for the next 15 days and all karyakartas have been instructed to reach out to people for assistance. A help desk has been opened and district BJP secretary Gopal Kanti Roy has been given the responsibility to coordinate the proceedings for assistance, the BJP leadership informed.
