At a time when concerns over voter apathy persist, eminent Barak Valley surgeon Dr Siddhartha Bhattacharjee offered a deeply moving example of civic resolve, casting his vote on Thursday just four days after losing his mother on April 5.

Accompanied by his brother Sib Shankar Bhattacharjee and son Dr Samujjwal Bhattacharjee, his quiet act stood as a powerful affirmation of democratic duty in the face of personal grief.

“Though I lost my mother on April 5, I felt it was important to fulfil my civic responsibility. Today, I cast my vote,” he said, underscoring the belief that participation in the democratic process remains a shared national obligation.

Assam records nearly 18 % voter turnout in first two hours of assembly polls (Input from PTI)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has appealed to voters in Assam to turn out in large numbers as polling gets underway across the state.

In a social media message to the electorate, he urged citizens to “give a record-setting mandate” to a government that, he said, would continue the era of peace and development.

He also emphasised that every vote will contribute towards ensuring secure borders, sustained progress, and the protection of Assam’s cultural heritage.

Congress candidate from Barchala constituency, Ripun Bora, has exercised his franchise.

A clash has been reported from the 55 No. Dhing Assembly constituency in Nagaon district.

The incident occurred at Polling Station No. 166 under Barbheti Panchayat, where supporters of Raijor Dal and All India United Democratic Front were involved in a scuffle.

According to initial reports, the altercation broke out over a dispute while voters were standing in queue to cast their votes.

PM calls for enthusiastic participation in ‘festival of democracy’:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on social media in Assamese, urged people to participate in large numbers in what he termed the biggest festival of democracy.

He said, “As polling begins for the Assam Assembly elections 2026, I appeal to the people of Assam to exercise their franchise in large numbers. I hope that the state’s youth and women voters participate enthusiastically and make this election a celebration of democracy and public duty."
