Nowadays, cities are cramped with buildings, flats, offices, etc. According to UN estimates, 50 per cent of the projected increase in the world’s urban population would be from rural to urban migration. Migrants from rural areas account for 81.26 per cent of the total migrants in India. Thus, there is hardly any space left for vegetation. Having a garden in the backyard is a luxury for even a rich city dweller. Moreover, the working-class in cities barely have time to have a leisurely breakfast, let alone having gardening as a hobby. That’s when ‘indoor gardening’ can be a quintessential part of today’s urban lifestyle.
Interior decoration, in no time, has become an irreplaceable trend in modern times. Everyone wants to give their dream house a unique makeover to add extra splendour. And, one can now surely look forward to indoor gardening as a potent component of interior decor. It may sound difficult for those who have never tried their hand at gardening, but, if you trust the experts, indoor gardening can surely reduce stress levels, boost creativity and productivity, apart from decorating your house.
Here is a list of five indoor plants that beginners can look up to enhance the beauty of their interiors and for improving the air quality index of their house:
Fiddle leaf fig
The Ficus lyrata or the fiddle leaf fig is an amazing indoor plant which is efficient in reducing the humidity level of a room. Moreover, it is also known for its air purifying qualities. This plant loves humid and warm spaces; so it can be easily placed in the bright part of the room.
ZZ Plant
The Zamioculcas zamiifolia plant is one of the most stylish indoor plants known for its effective quality of removing chemicals like toulene or xylene from the air. It requires very less care. One can easily water this plant once in 10 to 14 days.
Rubber Plant
The Ficus elastica, also known as the rubber plant, is best-known for removing pollutants like formaldehyde from the air. The only thing that needs to be taken care of is that the soil must always remain moist. It doesn’t mean that one has to water it all the time, moderate watering is all that is required. Apart from that, it should be kept in mind that the plant should not face direct sunlight.
Areca palm
The Dypsis Lutescens, better known as the areca palm, is a beautiful indoor plant which is available in different sizes, ranging from one ft to four ft. It is highly recommended because of its quality of removing toxic pollutants like benzene and formaldehyde. They are best suited for study corners. The important thing that one should keep in mind is that it should be exposed to indirect sunlight and the roots should get enough water (water once in three days). Apart from that, one should also keep in mind that the roots should not be disturbed. So, it is advisable to allow the plant to be in a plastic bag until it is fully grown.
Monstera
Another indoor plant is the Monstera Obliqua or commonly known as monstera. It is best-known for removing toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, and it cleanses the air. It should be kept in a well-lit corner of the house but should never be exposed to direct sunlight.
A well-lit house with adequate ventilation is a must for a healthy lifestyle. If the rooms can be filled with a wide mix of indoor plants, it is certainly going to add a new dimension to the interiors.
