Hold your breath. The word owes its origin to the Sanskrit word chapatti. It refers to any type of pressing, kneading, or soothing. In 1860, this definition was extended to mean ‘wash the hair’. In 1950, it was further extended to refer to washing of carpets and other materials.

IT is derived from the Latin word ‘pŷthon’ and the Greek word ‘pŭthǒn’. Both refer to the “serpent slain who was fabled to have been called Pythius in commemoration of his victory near Delphi by Apollo according to myth”.
