Love is one of the strongest emotions to rule over our lives. It is a sacred feeling which has no boundaries. Anyone who has loved or has been loved knows that it is the most wonderful feeling on earth. It may not always indicate a romantic affair for love has many forms – the love of parents, relatives, siblings and friends. On any given day, we are nourished by a variety of relationships. From coordinating our day with our parents, spouse or children, to collaborating with colleagues, saying ‘hello’ to the friendly cashier or our favourite grocery-man – loving relationships sustain us, define us. Having a close friend or partner to share the good times with feels wonderful.
In today’s digital age though, hasn’t love become more complex? With the changing trends of society and the advent of social media, it is no surprise that technology is actually weakening all our familiar bonds. People are distracted by their phones even in the presence of a romantic partner. We exist in the modern age where a relationship blossoms online with increasing dating disasters which are often heart-breaking as one’s trust is visibly shaken. Yes, it is true that break-ups and unhealthy relationships have always been around, but the digital age has exacerbated them, resulting in anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses.
Love also involves some degree of compromise and sacrifice. It is not a bed of roses and is often elusive. Love is the purest form of connection, emotional and physical, yet being in a relationship requires hard work, particularly communication and trust. Love, no matter what form it comes in, helps people incorporate safer behaviours into their everyday lives. Keeping a positive mindset and spending quality time sans distraction is important in empowering each other. Only then will you rise in love.
