Guwahati, May 3: The BJP-led ruling alliance in Assam has retained power in the state by winning 75 seats between the three partners, as per the final result tally of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
BJP failed to secure an absolute majority on its own and had to contend with 60 seats in the House of 126 members. It had as many members in the outgoing Assembly.
It's ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), fared poorly compared to five years ago and could manage nine seats this time, against former tally of 14 seats.
The new entrant to the alliance, United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), bagged six seats.
The main Opposition party Congress, which was reduced to 19 members in the outgoing Assembly, improved it's tally to finish with 29 seats. It had won 26 seats in the 2016 state polls, but deaths and defection of sitting MLAs had cut down it's tally.
It's ally, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), too managed more seats than five years ago, securing 16 this time against 13 in 2016.
Another partner of the opposition's 'grand alliance', the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which had left the ruling coalition ahead of the polls, could bag only four seats, down from 12 seats in 2016 polls.
The only other partner of the 'grand alliance' to open its account was CPI(M) with a single winner.
Newly-floated Raijor Dal, which is yet to be recognised by the Election Commission of India, secured one seat.
