Guwahati, April 9: Voting for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections has begun, with voters across all 126 Assembly constituencies stepping out to cast their ballots since polling opened at 7 am.
Polling will continue till 5 pm, while counting of votes and declaration of results are scheduled for May 4.
In a significant shift from the previous Assembly polls held in three phases in 2021, this year’s election is being conducted in a single phase, with over 2.5 crore voters expected to exercise their franchise in what is being seen as one of the most closely watched political contests in the Northeast.

Security has been tightened across the state, with polling personnel and law enforcement agencies deployed in sensitive and vulnerable areas to ensure peaceful voting and maintain law and order throughout the day.

Voter dies at Gauripur polling station
A 54-year-old voter, identified as Babar Ali, reportedly collapsed and died at Polling Station No. 2108, Char Moragadhadhar LP School in Gauripur on Thursday.
According to preliminary reports, he fell ill while standing in the queue to cast his vote and was pronounced dead despite immediate medical attention.

Poll Violence in Khowang LAC:
Violence erupted in Khowang, with open confrontation between Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and BJP supporters.
Attack Alleged: BJP alleges that AJP workers attacked party members near the residence of MLA Chakradhar Gogoi.
Injuries Reported: Several people were injured, including BJP Jharkhand in-charge Prahlad Pandey.
Vandalism: BJP workers say a vehicle with registration AS 06 R 4774 was damaged during the clash.
Protest & Road Block: BJP workers blocked the four-lane national highway in Khowang demanding the arrest of the assailants.
Senior police officials are reportedly present on the site to control the situation and restore order.

After Chief Minister Sarma casting his vote, an interaction with the press took a tense turn when a reporter questioned him about his choice of language against the Opposition during the final phase of campaigning.
Sarma responded sharply, defending his remarks and countering that his language was “better than that of the organisation” the journalist represented, before moving on to other questions.

Sporadic clashes & arrests reported across Assam polls
Nine people have been arrested in connection with scattered incidents of poll-related violence reported across the state till 1 PM today.
• Tamulpur (BTAD): A clash between two groups was reported late Wednesday night before polling began; four arrests were made.
• Sivasagar: Two to three party workers were attacked; three persons detained and investigation is ongoing.
• Merapani Kalyanpur (Golaghat): Police detained individuals following a clash at a polling station.
• Other districts: Minor clashes erupted at several booths in Sribhumi, Golaghat and Nagaon, often due to queue disputes amid heavy voter rush.
Polling remains uninterrupted in most parts of the state with a strong security presence ensuring order.

FIR against violation of secrecy of vote
An incident has come to the notice of the Karbi Anglong District Administration regarding circulation of a video on social media purportedly showing the election process inside a polling station. Taking serious cognizance of the matter, an FIR has been promptly registered under relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the facts and identify those responsible. Appropriate legal action will be taken against any violations of election laws.
